True Sons of Stapleford

Project overview

The village archive of Stapleford contains a remarkable document. It is a programme of the celebratory event held to welcome back the men who went to the fight in the First World War. This programme contained a menu, the toasts that were proposed and answered and a list of songs sung by the concert party who contributed songs and recitations to entertain those present.

The Stapleford History Society researched all of the men who went to war – those who died and those who returned.

The project activities involved a play, an evening of poetry and music, school work, an exhibition and a recreation of the homecoming dinner complete with food based on the original menu and our very own concert party.

“It must have been an enormous amount of work to get it all set up so beautifully and so aligned with the orginal dinner in 1919. So - brilliant effort, much enjoyed.”
